Secondary

In our Secondary department, there are four classes including children from 10 to 16 years of age.

These classes are:

Senior 1 (Years 8 to 9)

Senior 2 (Years 10 -11)

Senior 3 (our specialist Secondary ABA provision for children aged from 10 up until 16)

Senior 4 (our specialist PMLD provision for children aged from 11 up until 16)

Click here for further detail about our ABA provision and PMLD provision.

In the other two classes, children are grouped according to age and therefore activities are planned and differentiated for individuals and groups during the school day.

Pupils in Senior 1 continue to learn through a thematic approach, enjoying learning centred on the same termly theme as our primary department. They will develop skills and understanding across the curriculum subjects but there will also be an emphasis on functional skills in order to ensure maximum progress in English and Mathematics to support future learning. Children in Senior 1 are given increasing responsibility for their own learning and will be supported to apply these functional skills to real-life situations.

In Senior 2, we aim to prepare children for post-16 success and a smooth transition into sixth form. They follow the same themes as our post-16 pupils and these are drawn from the Equals ‘Moving On’ curriculum. Young people in this class are encouraged to become safer and more confident in their local community and there are many opportunities for regular activities out of school. Whether in the classroom or elsewhere, learning opportunities are planned and organised in conjunction with the students and they are given more responsibility and autonomy as appropriate. The functional skills programme begins in Year 10 and teachers ensure that pupils are challenged and supported to use these skills in preparation for accreditation opportunities at sixth form.
