About Us

Kings Mill School caters for children aged 2 - 19 years with severe or complex learning disabilities.  Many learners have challenging behaviour, autism, sensory impairment, communication & physical difficulties.  A few have degenerative conditions.

The school comprises of 138 pupils of which 31 are at the Kings Mill Student Centre, our sixth form provision, which is based at Driffield School and the school population is usually two-thirds boys to one-third girls.

The school has a 'short break' residential facility where some children stay for one or two nights. They must be assessed by the Children's Disability Team before this can happen.

Pupils perform well below the national average and we use Ipsative assessment to track progress. We use a range of appropriate assessment tools including QUEST, MAPP, ABA and AFALS. Further information is available on the curriculum page.  All pupils have an EHCP or are being formally assessed, due to their recent arrival at the school.  Attainment on entry is well below the national average.

The school has a wide catchment area with children attending from all over the East Riding of Yorkshire.  Most pupils travel on local authority transport to and from school.  The socio-economic areas range from rural areas to towns.  There are some areas of social deprivation and also some prosperous areas.   We currently have 57% of our school age pupils eligible for pupil premium funding.
