RE Curriculum
Statement of Intent
Religious Education has a significant role in the development of the pupils at Kings Mill Schools spiritual, moral and social and cultural development. The principle aim is to engage pupils in systematic learning through enquiry, exploration, sensory learning that promotes respect and open mindedness towards different religions. In RE we aim to explore the big questions about life and finding out what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live. As a school we want to encourage the children to develop an understanding and appreciation for the expression of beliefs, cultural practices and influences of the principle religions and worldviews within school, locally and around the world alongside developing and building upon their own thoughts, opinions, questions and beliefs. The school ethos of ‘learning for life’ is intertwined with our RE curriculum giving the children to develop skills that will help them develop not only in school but throughout the life.

Curriculum Breakdown
It is statutory that the Kings Mill School must follow the Locally agreed syllabus, however due to the nature of the school Kings Mill School will be following the SEND modules.
Implementation of Religious Education is unique within the curriculum. It is neither a core nor a foundation subject; however, it is compulsory within schools. Parents and guardians are however given the option to opt out of RE if they wish.
The local authority state: Parents/Carers may withdraw their children from all or part of the RE curriculum. They do not have to provide a reason for this and the school must comply with the request. It has a responsibility to supervise any pupils who are withdrawn from RE but is not required to provide additional teaching or incur extra costs. If parents/carers wish their child to receive an alternative programme of RE it is their responsibility to arrange this. This could be provided at the school in question or another local school. The pupil may receive external RE teaching provided that this does not significantly impact on his/her attendance.
